It seems that almost every day we hear reports of another data breach impacting local government. Data breaches are often the result of an escalating series of non-technical failures which include lack of preparation, lack of adequate employee training designed to increase awareness of risky behavior and incomplete or non-existent evaluations and protections involving vendors and other third parties who receive valuable data from the organization. Through a series of hypothetical incidents attendees will work through the twists and turns of a data security incident. This is a practical and interactive session, participants will: (1) receive tips for increasing organizational awareness of cybersecurity risks; (2) examine the challenges of managing cybersecurity risks; and (3) learn about best practices to create a culture of cyber awareness.

Matt Meade is a partner with the law firm of Eckert Seaman Cherin and Mellott, LLC and is the Chair of the firm’s Cybersecurity, Data Protection and Privacy Group. He concentrates his practice in the area of cyber security and regularly guides clients through security incident investigations, analysis of notification requirements, communications, and, if necessary, responding to regulatory inquiries and litigation. He advises clients on security breach notification laws and other U.S. state and federal data security requirements. Matt regularly conducts and facilitates cyber tabletop exercises designed to test the incident response team’s ability to manage and respond to data breaches. Matt speaks and writes regularly on data security matters and serves on The Sedona Conference Working Group Series Leadership Council, after previously serving on the Steering Committee for Working Group 11 on Data Security and Privacy, through which lawyers, judges, policy makers, security experts.
